In the modern, Web 2.0 world of internet these days, there’s a lot of companies offering image hosting services. Some are free, some aren’t and some of them require you to pay upgrade fees if you upload too much or need more storage. It never actually matter anyway, as in the internet, there’s a rule of thumb that says, the best, and the easiest service to use will always won. And until now, I never actually find image hosting that is easy to use, with cool interface and fast baner-less layout. There’s almost always a catch, behind the catchy name and the famous service of image hosting.

But that is until now, as there’s a new service in town, and it’s GOOD.

Terhitung sejak kamis, 3 Juli 2008 Kompas menyediakan versi digital dari edisi cetak kompasnya yang benar-benar digital alias bukan sekedar berita di edisi cetak yang di-digitalkan. Kali ini Kompas terlihat telah menggunakan teknologi yang lebih canggih dengan menggunakan aplikasi bernama Softpress yang dibuat oleh developer publishing application bernama Serioustec. Dengan menggunakan aplkasi ini, kini membaca kompas Digital tidak lagi terasa “garing”, karena tampilan yang didapat benar-benar berbentuk koran Kompas yang terbit setiap harinya. Tentunya lengkap dengan Klasika dan iklan-iklan lainnya juga.

Entah karena saya tertinggal informasi atau bagaimana, tapi ternyata sebelum Kompas merilis e-papernya hari kamis lalu, koran Kontan telah merilis edisi digital dari hariannya dengan menggunakan aplikasi yang sama dengan yang Kompas gunakan yaitu Softpress. Entah mungkin nantinya aplikasi ini akan menjadi pilihan banyak media konvensional Indonesia lainny, saya juga tidak tahu. Yang jelas kehadiran edisi digital kedua koran ini telah menjadi harapan baru bagi pecandu dan pengguna internet Indonesia untuk menghemat pengeluaran sekaligus waktu. Harapan saya cuma satu, yaitu group Kompas benar-benar men-digitalkan seluruh line-up medianya, termasuk tabloid Otomotif dan majalah Hai. Masalah penurunan pendapatan karena oplah edisi cetak berkurang, menurut saya harusnya bagian marketing group Kompas bisa menciptakan formula baru penjualan iklan berbasis jumlah pengunjung e-paper setiap harinya. Atau malah iklan yang ada pada e-paper dapat dibuat clickable sehingga menciptakan trend baru dunia periklanan Indonesia? Siapa tahu.

Tampilan e-paper Kontan, dilengkapi dengan edisi mingguan dan khusus

Hanya satu sepertinya yang masih perlu diperhatikan harian kompas dalam mengelola e-papernya, yaitu konsistensi dalam meng-update e-paper setiap harinya. Bukan apa-apa, sampai saat ini (Sabtu) e-paper yang dapat diakses hanya edisi tanggal 1 Juli (Senin) hingga 4 Juli (Jumat) kemarin. Apabila inkonsistensi semacam ini masih terus ditemui pada e-paper Kompas di masa depan, bukan tidak mungkin pembaca harian kompas konvensional alias edisi cetak akan takut untuk pindah ke e-paper Kompas. Sebagai salah satu koran pertama yang mulai menggunakan konsep baru ini, Kompas harus hati-hati dengan inkonsistensi pada manajemennya, karena konsep e-paper yang masih baru ini sangat rapuh dengan image yang akan dibentuk. Apabila konsep e-paper ini terbukti tidak dapat menghantarkan konsistensi seperti yang didapat pembaca koran konvensional (edisi cetak), maka umur konsep ini bisa hampir dipastikan tidak akan panjang. Well, semoga kesalahan ini bukan disengaja dan memang hanya karena segala sesuatunya masih baru. Untuk kedepannya, saya harap Kompas akan terus memperbaiki kesalahan-kesalahan pada sistem baru e-paper ini.

Pada akhirnya, e-paper dan koran konvensional yang dicetak diatas kertas hanyalah media yang menyampaikan berita. Yang lebih perlu diperhatikan adalah bagaimana Kompas dapat tetap menjadi media yang adil dan seimbang dalam menyampaikan berita, namun sekaligus mengikuti perkembangan jaman dan mendukung pergerakan civil-journalism di internet pada umumnya. Pembelaan yang berlebihan dari media konvensional untuk mempertahankan tradisinya sebagai media yang dicetak diatas kertas dan menutup mata akan pergerakan civil journalism semacam blog di internet hanya akan mematikan media itu sendiri. Kompas sepertinya merespon hal ini dengan cukup baik terbukti dengan dirilisnya edisi digital koran Kompas yang disebut e-paper ini, yang pada akhirnya akan meningkatkan tingkat popularitas Kompas di internet mengingat mudahnya kuli keyboard seperti blogger untuk menjadikan Kompas Cetak Digital sebagai referensi.

Update (06/07/08) : Sampai saat ini e-paper Kompas masih menampilkan koran terakhir tanggal 4 Juli 2008. Entah kekonyolan apa yang sedang terjadi di bagian e-paper Kompas, saya tidak tahu. (Atau redaksi Kompas libur sabtu-minggu?)
